How to Replace Range/Stove/Oven Bake or Broil Spark Electrode

  1. Disconnect power:
Turn off power to the range at the main circuit breaker to ensure safety.

  2. Locate the spark electrode:
Find the oven spark electrode near the top or back of the oven cavity.

  3. Unfasten the wire connector:
Twist the wire connector to disconnect it from the electrode terminal.

  4. Remove the mounting screw:
Unscrew the mounting screw that secures the electrode to the back oven panel.

  5. Remove the electrode:
Gently wiggle the electrode straight up and out of the mounting hole.

  6. Insert the replacement electrode:
Place the new electrode through the mounting hole in the back panel.

  7. Secure the new electrode:
Tighten the mounting screw fully by hand to secure the new electrode in place.

  8. Reconnect the wire connector:
Firmly push the wire connector onto the electrode terminal.

  9. Replace any removed panels:
Reinstall any panels or insulation that were removed during the process to ensure safe operation.

  10. Restore power and test:
Turn the power back on at the circuit breaker and test the oven ignitor functions to ensure proper operation before using the oven.

By following these steps, you can successfully replace the bake or broil spark electrode in your oven, ensuring it ignites properly for efficient cooking.

Most Common Solution

An oven burner spark electrode is used to light up the gas for the bake and broil burners. This electrode, a device located next to the burner, works like a spark plug. When electricity is supplied, a spark jumps from the tip of the electrode to its shield, lighting the gas. If the electrode is damaged or worn out, the spark might not happen. Look at the electrode assembly closely for cracks in the porcelain housing or damage to the electrode tip. Keep in mind, the range needs a proper ground and the correct incoming voltage for the electrode control to detect a flame once the burner is lit. If the burner turns off after being lit, ensure there's a proper ground and the correct polarity at the wall outlet.
